Captain Booker Cain, a name to send shivers down one's spine when the uncanny fog rolls in. Decades of experience at sea, hundreds of sunken ships under the name of her feared Ardent, many more damaged and living to tell the tale. Such were the early years of Booker's life at sea, but even earlier were her years of captaining one of her father's ships. Official business, proper trade, all sorts of boring things to lead Booker to abhor the idea of a simple life. She trained under her mother in hopes of her medical practice being more exciting, but found only pity and the bitter stench of sage. So, as she grew older, she worked up the funds to afford her own ship - the Ardent, she named it. A nod to her eagerness to leave the shores of Epheria and see the sea properly. She gathered a crew, and while some have come and go over the years, she has yet to part ways with her beloved Ardent. But, Booker has always been the sort to remain unsatisfied by whatever excitement she chases. Especially so once she catches it. So, after some time of her exciting youth spent stealing ships and poaching crews, she would settle back home and take up her mother's medical practice. There were of course the bounties to worry about, but the lower class would act as her shield, given her medicine and healing was offered for favors only. She would refuse any coin, of any kingdom, and insist the favor of healing be repaid in similar fashion. She would craft medicines and odd remedies from her mother's Mediahn roots, earning the ire of the church even moreso.

Time would pass and Booker would come to be with child, naming her Michaela, and solidifying her as her priority above all else. So, with new purpose, she would settle her warrants in Calpheon and Mediah, moving to settle in Olvia, turning her trade company into a more reputable name and taking up whaling. Her goal was not only excitement, but to have in place a legacy for her daughter to inherit. And yet, now with more ships to her fleet and plenty of funds to keep her, her daughter, and her crew happy for years to come, she begins to beckon the fog again... Long live the tyrant of the blood-seas, for she knows no complacency.

FLUCTUAT nec MERGITUR

Booker is no stranger to illegal trade and smuggling rings, and can occasionally be seen making deals in taverns and lounges while the general rabble offers suitable cover. However, she is not the primary deal-maker of her crew, meaning any deals she directly makes are likely to be high interest, high risk, or quite possibly not a deal for her crew at all.

CHARACTER HOOKS

FIRST FOG, THEN CANNONS

common hook | sea travel

Many a sailor knows to fear the fog come all too quick. Over the years of her career at sea, Booker and her crew have long since employed the use of illusion and weather magic to call upon fog when it would not naturally appear. The Ardent, the favorite child of the crew, is known to appear out of the fog, quick to use its specialized harpoons and hook systems to grapple onto other ships and board them, a quick capture if the attacked are not prepared. Many know that some of her own crew have fallen to this same trick, and when held at gunpoint, were offered the decision between death or joining her crew, indebted and indentured, but only until loyalty is proven or their debt is paid in ransom or work.

Beyond just piracy, Booker is known as the head of the Waxwing Trade Co., a growing company that deals in imports and exports between the mainland and the land of the morning light. Routes can vary from local, mid-length, or long distance, the only thing that changes is the price and the down payment. All shipments require a down payment, and the distance decides what percentage that will be. The rest is paid once the crew returns with a signature from the destination. The crew however does not only deal in legal trade. Rather, the often smuggle goods in and out of various territories, specializing in the smuggling of black stones and black stone powder. But, so long as the coin is right, the crew is more or less willing to smuggle anything - people included. Extra fees for the unruly cargo.

A DRINK MOST WELCOME

common hook | tavern

It's not difficult to hear of the rumor of Booker's alcoholism. In fact, some say she suffers from various substance addictions. So, as much as she enjoys her time at sea, she just can't seem to stay away from the taverns and anywhere else serving alcohol in a setting that allows her her smokes.Often the sort to sit alone and never say no to a drink slid her way, she's a decent figure to be around while properly drunk. Just keep the liquor flowing and she won't turn sour. She's even got a sense of humor that isn't insulting when the air of her company is equally as laid back. Just... Be wary of the matchlock she carries with her. She's been known to fire it in the face of any who think themselves better than her... Sometimes blanks, sometimes not.

Many know Booker a sorceress of sorts, but very few know just what she practices. Those who come to her for medical help know of her blood magic, those who have entered her home know of her rune magic, but so few know of her past in necromancy. But those who know, those who have been by her for quite some time, know of the effect it has had on her and what brought her to give it up. Other than her crew and her family, only those she would have had occult connections with would know of the rapid aging she endures as a result of a forced spell to resurrect an old friend some years ago.She hides the effects well with rigorous skincare and hair dyes, but there is a reason none see her without her hat. Gray roots look all too incriminating on a woman who appears only in her late thirties. And yet, she is left with creaks in her joints and all the complaints of old age, leaving her searching desperately for something to at the very least return it to its natural pace.
